All reports should give a clear indication of what progress has been made and what the next steps are. Reports should be fair and honest and should stress the positive while not ignoring problems or difficulties. The department refers to the guidelines in the school handbook for report-writing. All reports are submitted to the PT for monitoring before being passed to Guidance.

The classroom teacher keeps assessment records for each learner. These are also recorded in the Modern Languages folder in Staff on the network, as are behaviour records. This is a new system which needs to be further developed to ensure that it is both sufficient and manageable.
A central filing system where all pupil records is be stored can be found in the cupboard (5 on map)
Students are expected to keep a record of their own learning by using their homework booklet and/or the Progress Card when available. This means that there is a checklist of work done at any given time. It is important to stress that the member of staff will monitor these lists.
Some learners are also expected to use a self-access system and record their work on a separate sheet where appropriate.
S3-S6
Teachers of Standard Grade classes keep records of achievement for the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing for each learner. These are assessed in accordance with SQA guidelines.
Teachers of Higher Still classes use the records of achievement provided in the SQA materials.
To ensure common standards and consistency throughout the department, we regularly use DM time to mark speaking or writing assessments as a team. All members of the department are SQA markers.
Teacher records
For the class teacher the most important item of record keeping is the school year diary in which is written all business of a day to day nature and which can be used as record of work and/or preparation checklist. Additionally each learner has a file containing samples of work, assessments, punishment exercises, referrals, reports and letters to parents and marks for each pupil. This contains the more detailed records required for accurate pupil profiling. Some classes have a wall chart which shows their progress through a unit/s of work and/or assessments.
Each teacher keeps A3 sheets with all the class registers and positive behaviour procedures. These sheets can be found on the walls or on a folder kept on the teacher’s desk.
Assessment records are found on the network (G:/Staff/Modern Languages/Assessment Records).
It is essential to take the register every lesson and to keep the assessment records up to date.
Pupil difficulty
Where a member of the department feels that a pupil is experiencing particular difficulty, then this is to be discussed within the department. Where appropriate, the matter will be referred to the House Staff/ House Head via the target-setting software.
